A sentiment echoed by Maria Steyn, the founder, and owner of Spectrum African Travel.

Maria started her career in sunny Pretoria and was fortunate to be able to frequently travel to the breath-taking Kruger National Park. Experiences such as watching leopards eating their kill, close encounters with rhino, and looking up at a huge regal male elephant left Maria forever changed, in love with wildlife excursions, and sparked her overall passion for travel.

The raw experience of touring the center of Joburg as well as Soweto – with their often sad but always interesting history – expanded both Maria’s heart and mind.

Once her family moved and started their journey in the Mother City of Cape Town in 2013, Maria’s perspective of travel was yet again broadened and renewed. Living and working in a city surrounded by mountains and Winelands, resulted in a passion for wine and the tourism industry around Cape Town and its gorgeous scenery.

Maria could not get enough of the diverse beauty and attractions in and around Cape Town and spent her time exploring the incomparable Table Mountain, bonding with the adorable penguin colony of Boulder’s Beach, and leisurely sampling wines at the vast options of Winelands in the area.

From here, she was also able to travel to neighbouring countries, starting in Botswana and delighting in her love of wildlife by exploring Maun, the Okavango Delta, and Chobe National Park. A tour of Zimbabwe followed, finding her basking in the spray, and marveling at the magical Victoria Falls. Another favourite trip was getting up close and personal with elephants and wild dogs in Hwange National Park.

All of these experiences solidified Maria’s resolve to introduce and share the continent that she so loves with fellow travel enthusiasts and travel novices alike.

Thus, with over 16 years’ experience in the travel industry, Spectrum African Travel was born from a passion for the industry, and a love for exploring and experiencing Africa and South Africa in particular.
